Understanding Speed Weeks
Christmas comes but once a year. The same is true of the unique qualifying format for the Daytona 500. Unlike Christmas, however, the setting and ordering of the field for the Great American Race takes five days, from single-car qualifying on Sunday through the Can-Am Duel at Daytona twin 150-mile races on Thursday. The basics are straightforward. Only two cars in Sunday's time trails are locked into their starting positions for the Daytona 500-the pole winner and the car that qualifies on the outside of the front row.
Of the 42 entries for the race, 36 hold Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series charters and are guaranteed to compete on Feb. 26. That leaves six drivers fighting for the four remaining positions in the 500. Those drivers are #7-Elliott Sadler, #51-Timmy Hill, #55-Reed Sorenson, #75-Brendan Gaughan, #83-Corey LaJoie and #96-DJ Kennington.
Qualifying on Sunday sets the starting order for the Can-Am Duel races on Thursday, with the odd-number qualifiers (positions 1-3-5, etc.) running the first Duel, and even numbers competing in the second Duel. The finishing positions in the Thursday races determine the starting positions for the 500, with the exception of the front row. The winner of the first Duel, which forms the inside row, starts third in the Great American Race, with the winner of the second Duel starting fourth, on the outside of the second row. If either of the front row starters wins a Duel, then the second-row position goes to second place finisher in that particular Duel.
Open drivers, those competing without charters, have two avenues into the 500. The highest-finishing driver in each of the Can-Am Duels earns a starting position on Feb. 26. The final two positions go to the two fastest among the open drivers in Sunday's time trials, if not already qualified through the Duels.

www.heraldcourier.com/sports/gregory-skimpy-clothing-chatter-covers-up-racing/article_cac52fe2-f971-11e6-b888-6b355d7aa791.htmlSKIMPY CLOTHING CHATTER The grandest show in NASCAR is only days away, yet the sport is mired in yet another culture war. Judging from the passionate fan reactions across all forms of social media, the hottest story of last weekend did not involve 21-year-old Daytona 500 pole-sitter Chase Elliott or Clash winner Joey Logano. Nope, more folks were peeved by the “revealing” leather attire of the Monster Energy girls. For weeks, many of these same critics welcomed Monster Energy as exactly the edgy title sponsor NASCAR needed to attract younger viewers. But those “shocking” new Victory Lane outfits were attacked for being “indecent” and “not suitable for family viewing.” One has to wonder where all these judges of good taste and public values where when Danica Patrick starred in a series of sexually tinged commercials for her former sponsor, GoDaddy. Patrick was praised as being great for the health of the sport, even after the tasteless spots aired amid much acclaim in prime time. We’re told that this is a bold new era for NASCAR, yet apart from the controversial Monster Energy girls there was a little in the way of signage or sizzle from the new title sponsor last weekend. And except for the surprise final act, the Clash was mostly an exercise in team orders with the Joe Gibbs Racing drivers functioning like a pro cycling team running in unison. The bright spots included the compelling episodes of three-wide action and the insightful analysis of Dale Earnhardt Jr. The subdued approaches of Earnhardt Jr and Jeff Gordon are a welcome respite from the screaming and outdated cornball comedy of Darrell Waltrip. With the restrictor plate chess game, Sunday’s Daytona 500 will not offer a true gauge for the impact of stage racing. But combine the rough surface of the track with the hunger of drivers and fans, and you have the makings of a fun evening. And if you actually prefer the cringe-worthy smiles and giggles of the old Sprint Cup girls to the new Monster Energy girls, just avoid the Victory Lane celebrations.
