UPDATE: A run for Congress?
Not so fast for former NASCAR Cup driver Carl Edwards, the subject of speculation for an upcoming run for U.S. Senate.
Helping coach his Joe Gibbs Racing replacement Daniel Suarez during a test Tuesday at Phoenix Raceway, Edwards had this to say about the news that he wouldn't rule out a run for office: "That went out of control. The point is I don't ever rule out anything. I don't have any interest in politics for politics. I really do believe in American and I believe that if a person can help maintain the future opportunities for other people like the opportunities all of us have had, that's our duty as Americans, that's what the whole country is founded on. If that's something down the line that fits in that I can do, that would be an endeavor that I would be real proud of.
But I'm not like putting together this campaign or something. Not right now."

Carl Edwards Updates his Status
Joe Rodgers Sporting News 3/1/17
"I've been working on some neat stuff but nothing I'm ready to talk about yet," Edwards said. "It's nothing earth-shattering. I'm just living life. ... We'll see how it all goes.
"I'm paying attention enough and staying really fit and as engaged as [Joe Gibbs Racing] will let me be. I'll always be ready if somebody needs a driver for something."
Last season, the need for a substitute driver was important with Dale Earnhardt Jr. missing the final half of the season with a concussion. Alex Bowman and Jeff Gordon, who came out of retirement to fill-in for Junior, shared duties the final 18 races of the season.
With concern over concussions at an all-time high and NASCAR changing its protocol at races, it's not inconceivable teams will need a replacement driver this season.
If so, Edwards will be ready.
Edwards has reportedly considered running for U.S. Senate in his time away from racing and has even been the center of bizarre rumors which link him to a new NASCAR team in 2018. Edwards has shot down the reports, but told ESPN.com he'll be back at the track this weekend in Atlanta helping replacement driver Daniel Suarez in his former No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
UpDate from Friday interview with Nate Ryan
Was he still interested in running for Senate as a report indicated in January?
“I haven’t decided on the political stuff,” he said. “Like I talked about at that press conference, I really believe in individual freedom and liberty and what the United States is based upon. I think, like anybody, I’ve been paying attention. It’s a little scary what’s been going on as a whole in our country and in the world.
“If I can help with that down the line, great. But I don’t have any firm plans right now.”

Edwards sets SUV speed record
JAYSKI 5/8/2017
Carl Edwards isn't racing in NASCAR this season, but he's still going plenty fast.
Edwards, who won 28 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races over 13 years first with Roush Fenway Racing and then Joe Gibbs Racing, recently drove a heavily modified Toyota Land Cruiser to a speed of 230.02 miles per hour, making it the World's Fastest SUV.
And in an exclusive interview with FOXSports.com, Edwards talked about what driving the 2,000-horsepower beast was like.
"I went out there on the top speed run and it made some sort of noise," Edwards told FOXSports.com of his record run. "All I could think was that this might be our only shot at getting the record and so I kept my foot in it." From there, the drama only got bigger.
"The front end kind of wandered at about 225 (mph) and I thought, 'Holy crap, I don't know what's coming next,'" said Edwards. "Once I saw 230 - we actually got to 232 or 34 - I shut it down. Man, my heart was pounding. I'm not exaggerating. It was pretty exciting."
Edwards made his record run at the Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California, which has a straightaway that is 2.5 miles long. And Edwards said he flew there in his Cessna and landed on the same runway where he set his record.
On his first run, Edwards hit 211 mph before running out of usable pavement. He brought the big SUV in and Toyota's engineers turned up the boost, allowing him to hit 230.02 mph on the next run.
The 2,000-horse SUV is nicknamed the Land Speed Cruiser. Based on a stock Land Cruiser, it was heavily modified by a team of engineers at Toyota's Motorsports Technical Center (MTC) before debuting at the 2016 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show.
I (Jensen) then asked Edwards what his next adventure would be.
"I got about 1,800 acres of soybeans to plant, but that's about it for right now."

As of March 2018 Carl Edwards has no plans to return to racing
Carl Edwards spoke Wednesday night more than a year after leaving full-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driving, and to the disappointment of many fans, he isn't planning a return.
"I don't have any plans to come back," Edwards told Claire B. Lang on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "I do miss a lot of people. I stay in touch with a lot of folks and have fun, but I really appreciate the time from Joe Gibbs and everyone else to go do the things I want to do.
"I do miss the fans and there are a couple races I'd like to be a part of, but for the most part I'm having a lot of fun."
Edwards said he's overheard one rumor (in person, no less) that he had died, which he obviously assured fans isn't close to true. As for the popular rumor that he might run for office, well, that has a better chance.
"I really believe in America and that the Constitution is a fair rule that's letting us have all of our success and our freedom," Edwards said." So if sometime there's a chance for me to help that cause and lend some assistance to not letting us get off track, then heck yes. But there's nothing planned any time soon."

It sure looks like most who leave NASCAR are happy. But I wish somebody would interview Matt Kennseth to see where his head is at.
