Ryan went down 3 laps after pitting under green. He had a tire spin on the wheel. Ryan at the time thought he had a loose wheel. They also speculated that the tire was coming apart from the inside. Another one of those strange things that never happen seem to find its way into Ryans luck.
So while Ryan was 3 laps down he ran his way through traffic & caught back up to the leaders & passed them before a yellow came out. Putting him 2 laps.
Restarting at the very back of the field after taking a wave around. (putting him one lap down on older tires) he found himself passing lead lap cars but unfortunately the leader caught him & passed him the same lap the yellow came out. So even though he ran hard & had speed to pass cars on older tires, he was one lap shy from making the wave around work to his favor. So he was 2 laps down after that yellow.
Now on equal tires starting behind all the one lap down cars on the restart, he quickly passed them all to be the 1st lapped car behind the leaders (but was 2 laps down so wasn't the lucky dog) He also was passing the cars that ended up in the top 5. Ryan had a really good car & could have possibly won if not for the spun tire.
Next yellow again Luke told Ryan we are going for the one lap down & take the wave around again. Told Ryan he knew if they could get one lap down that he wcould get the Lucky dog. So they gambled again on older tires & stayed out (ryan now back to one lap down) Again even on older tires he was racing with lead lap cars & passing some, including Stewart on fresh tires. The man knows how to put his head down elbows up & drive the hell out of a race car. On a side note. Danica who had fresh tires was able to follow ryan through traffic that run & pass some cars too. She actually didn't look bad later in the race. (before running into Bowyer on pitroad)
When the next yellow came out Ryan was still one lap down & the leader never caught him to put him back down a lap so now only one lap down he pitted for fresh tires & only the 15 car & the 51 car were in front of him for the Lucky Dog. (the 10 was behind ryan one lap down also) later in the race thoughif the cars held the high line the passing was hard to complete. Despite all the talk from the media of all the passing three wide & such. What they don't point out is when that happened it was cars passing slow cars, not the good hard racing they were saying. Was expecting for Ryan to mow right past the `15 & the 51 but got caught be hind some cars several laps down & took a few laps to catch those two. On fresh tires it took longer than I liked for Ryan to get around them but he finally did & ran in the Lucky dog position for a long time. I was wishing for a quick yellow but it never came. When the flag man screwed up & caused a caution. the put Ryan on the lead lap. Even though they never took the green again, he did officially finish on the lead lap.
I like the fact that Luke is aware of whats going on around them & will call out strategy on the fly if need be. This is a great improvement from when Ryan was at SHR. Even though they had some bad luck, they never quit & even though most will never know it. Ryan had to drive as hard as he could from the moment he made a green flag stop, to the end. The whole time they planned on making it back to the lead lap & ryan flat out said, if I get back on the lead lap I can win this thing.
If they settled for their fate & stayed 3 laps down he was around p30. Because they have no quit in them & drove it like he stole it, he salvaged a p16 last car on the lead lap. if a yellow comes out a 1/4 lap earlier on his 1st wave around he would have been on the lead lap with a ton of laps left. With all the super fast cars having issues, he might have gone from 3 laps down to Victory Lane.
So to the Ryan fans out there don't get down on their race. The stooges were wrong the whole race when talking about ryan. He fell back so fast because of a tire problem, not because he was on old tires like they said. Ryan was passing cars that ended up in the top 5 on old tires. So Carl doing as well as he did on old tires at the end didn't surprise me at all, because you should never listen to the 3 stooges in the booth. They are usually clueless.
Be proud Ryan fans for we already knew Ryan never gives up, but now he has a team that doesn't give up either!!!
