What the heck could they have done to the windshields? They still have to fit the frames. Maybe made them bubble out a little, would that help with the air? I don't know, but Rutti and Truex were both fast, so what ever they did must have been working.

CUP: Windshields Confiscated From Toyota Teams NASCAR penalties expected to be announced next week… Mike Hembree | Posted October 21, 2011 Talladega, AL
Penalties are expected next week for NASCAR Sprint Cup teams whose windshields were confiscated by officials Friday at Talladega Superspeedway.
The Toyotas of drivers Bobby Labonte, David Reutimann and Martin Truex Jr. had windshields with “unapproved modifications,” according to NASCAR officials.
The windshields were confiscated before Friday’s two practice sessions.
Reutimann led the day’s second practice with a speed of 197.159 miles per hour.
Windshield changes could have a significant impact at Talladega, a track where car aerodynamic properties are critical.
Penalties for the violations are expected to be significant.

All the MWR windshields had to be changed except Mikey's.

NASCAR suspends 6 over illegal windshields
CONCORD, N.C. (AP)—NASCAR has issued four-week suspensions to the crew chiefs and car chiefs for Martin Truex Jr., David Reutimann and Bobby Labonte.
Chad Johnson, Rodney Childers and Frank Kerr also were fined $50,000 each, and the drivers docked 25 points apiece. The penalties are from illegal windshields discovered during Friday inspection at Talladega Superspeedway. NASCAR says they did not have the appropriate thickness.
Also suspended were car chiefs Steve Channing, Raymond Fox and Anthony Lunders.
The windshields were never used in competition.
The teams say they will not appeal the penalties.

Here is another article from the Yahoo site:
MWR and JTG-Daugherty Racing penalized for unapproved windshields By Nick Bromberg
Michael Waltrip Racing and JTG-Daugherty Racing and its drivers have been penalized for unapproved windshields on the cars at Talladega.
David Reutimann and Martin Truex, Jr. of MWR, and Bobby Labonte of JTG-Daugherty were each penalized 25 points and crew chiefs Rodney Childers (Reutimann), Chad Johnston (Truex) and Frank Kerr (Labonte) have been fined $50,000 and suspended for the final four races, as have the teams' car chiefs.
A NASCAR release said, "All three cars were found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-J (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules detailed in Section 20 of the rule book, or has not been approved by NASCAR prior to the event); and 20-3.2.1A (unapproved modification to an approved windshield) of the 2011 NASCAR rule book."
JTG-Daugherty has a technical alliance with MWR. Both teams will not appeal. Truex is now 25th in the points standings, while Reutimann and Labonte remain 28th and 29th.
"Michael Waltrip Racing is ultra-sensitive and very serious about working within the guidelines of NASCAR policy," MWR said in a statement. "We do not condone this type of activity and as such we will take appropriate internal corrective action immediately. We thank NASCAR for providing a fair and equitable platform for all of its competitors and respect its decisions; therefore, we will not appeal."
All three cars also were penalized 25 owners points and MWR competition director Bobby Kennedy was put on probation through the end of the year. Kennedy will serve as the interim crew chief for Reutimann, while Pat Tryson will serve as Truex's crew chief. Tryson was replaced by Johnston in June atop Truex's pit box.
JTG-Daugherty announced on Sunday that it would move into its own shop for 2012 and that former RCR crew chief Todd Berrier would be the crew chief for Labonte.

Funny how Mikey keeps getting caught and then blaming employees.

Does anyone know what modifications they made? Same situation when JGR brought unapproved oil pans, no fines for them though, I guess Nascar gave everybody a warning about bringing unapproved stuff to the track after that.

I can't remember where I read this or may even have heard it, but something about the windshields being thicker around the edges is vaguely in my mind. Sorry I cannot be more specific.

The windshields of MWR’s No. 56 Toyota, driven by Martin Truex Jr., and the No. 00, driven by David Reutimann, along with the No. 47 Toyota built by MWR for JTG/Daugherty Racing and driven by Bobby Labonte, were deemed in violation of NASCAR rules because of unapproved modifications, specifically that they were too thin. Reply by paul crawford on October 23, 2011 at 12:21pm from what i found out....the thinner windshields were installed loosely bolted in for tech inspection. then tightened up for racing - which then created a lil lip on the roofline which helped to deflect air off the spoiler at speed..thus reducing drag on the car...guess a lil aero cheating
