After a third-place finish at the Federated Auto Parts 400, Ryan Newman was down and out. It appeared as if the driver of the No. 39 Quicken Loans Chevrolet was going to be the odd man out of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship after a controversial finish in the regular season finale.
“What happened to me on Saturday night is the toughest thing I’ve ever gone through in any kind of racing in my 30 years of driving because of the way everything went down,” Newman said.
But just when Newman thought he was down on his luck, he caught a break. After an investigation into Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR), NASCAR announced that Newman will replace Martin Truex Jr. in the Chase. MWR was also fined $300,000 for manipulating the outcome of last weekend’s race after Clint Bowyer was found guilty of spinning out on purpose to propel Truex – his MWR teammate – into the Chase.
For fans of the Quicken Loans Chevrolet, it gets even better. As part of the Quicken Loans Bring It Home Sweepstakes, Quicken Loans has paid five people’s monthly mortgage payment every time Newman finished in the top 5 this season. To date, Newman’s six top-5 finishes amount to 30 people receiving a mortgage payment on us. In celebration of Newman’s eventful path to the Chase, we’ve decided to sweeten the pot. For all 10 Chase races, we will now pay 10 peoples’ mortgages each time Newman places in the top 10. That’s right– more winners and more chances to win!
After NASCAR’s announcement, Newman issued the following statement:
“I am proud that NASCAR took a stand with respect to what went on Saturday night. I know it was a tough decision to make. With that being said, myself, [crew chief] Matt Borland and this entire No. 39 team are looking forward to competing for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.”
MWR general manager Ty Norris also received an indefinite suspension, while Truex, Bowyer and Brian Vickers were all docked 50 points apiece for their part in the late-race controversy. In-car audio between Bowyer and crew chief Brian Pattie raised suspicion about the accident. After Bowyer was informed that Newman was leading the race, Pattie had this to say to Bowyer: “Is your arm starting to hurt? I bet it’s hot in there. Itch it.”
Soon after, Bowyer spun out, changing the outcome of the race and the Chase.
