I had a couple of old desk top computers in my den to get rid of so I took the hard drives out for privacy. While destroying the HDs I located the rare earth magnets used in the system and removed them to use around the house. Wow are they ever strong. I found them really good to use to on some stuff around here. Just figured others might want to know they are in there.
I just looked up rare earth magnets on Bing and they are pretty expensive.

They are a lot stronger than regular magnets like you buy at Home Depot. Lots stronger.

just got home from a gun show and they were selling those magnets in shrink wrap for $25 each. They are used to hide guns up under a desk, behind a bookcase etc. But you could use them on a workbench too. Would easily hold a hammer up against the pegboard.

How do you destroy the actual HD disks? I sometimes use a drill and punch holes in a line across the disks in several areas. The newer HDs have double disks but the metal is soft and easy to drill. Also have a pinch bar (6' long crow bar) that I smash the HD with. Sometimes drill then smash. But, I always remove them from the computer and separate or save the magnets.
