Very Good advice
With the start of the NFL season, perhaps all team owners should be sent the following:
From a Marine Corps Colonel in Afghanistan.
"So with all the kindness I can muster, I give this one piece of advice to the next pop star who is asked to sing the national anthem at a sporting event: save the vocal gymnastics and the physical gyrations for your concerts. Just sing this song the way you were taught to sing it in kindergarten - straight up, no styling.
"Sing it with the constant awareness that there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines watching you from bases and outposts all over the world. Don't make them cringe with your self-centered ego gratification.
Sing it as if you are standing before a row of 86-year-old WWII vets wearing their Purple Hearts, Silver Stars and flag pins on their cardigans and you want them to be proud of you for honoring them and the country they love - not because you want them to think you are a superstar musician.
They could see that from your costume, makeup and your entourage.
Sing 'The Star Spangled Banner' with the courtesy and humility that tells the audience that it is about America, not you.
Francis Scott Key does not need any help."

I prefer the classic or perhaps traditional singing of the Star Spangled Banner too.

I always thought it was bad etiquette to change how the National Anthem is sung.

If anybody tried to stylize the anthem of any other country the way they do ours, they would hang them on the spot! It should be that way here.

It seems to be used to undermine most old fashioned values. But you never see the news talking about the game knockout. Now there is some real racism. Scarey game for sure.

I would love it if all sporting events would just use military bands (king bri bri, I'm talking to you) or local college bands. Come on so called vocalists, sing with respect to our anthem & flag.

I have to admit I am not a fan of those that warble the National Anthem.

Yeah it was just my poor attempt at making fun of all the people running around screaming racist. I actually hate it when the Star Spangled Banner is butchered like that. Sorry if I upset you Goodgrief. Don't want to loose my guest pass to this place. It is fun here.

Couple thoughts on this:
I live about 15 minutes from where Francis Scott Key was born. His name is everywhere. The main shopping mall is "FSK Mall." The Single A Farm affiliate for the Orioles plays here..........."The Frederick Keys." Their mascot is "Keyote"
Having played the trumpet throughout grade school and college, I also prefer the instrumental version of the song, with a nod to military bands and schools. What's funny is that even though I got to play the melody during grade school and high school, the 4th chair part I had to play in college is the one I hum during the anthem.
